Creighton University’s Master of Arts in English can set you up for success in many areas. If you are looking to teach, pursue further graduate study, enhance your critical reading and writing skills, or better understand the rhetoric of daily life, this degree is a great fit for you.

This program was designed to meet the academic and professional goals of each student. You’ll work closely with renowned faculty, conduct research and gain hands-on teaching experience in college English classrooms.

Students in this program have the opportunity to choose from three concentrations:

  • Creative Writing
  • Literature
  • Rhetoric & Composition

As strong critical readers and writers, students who obtain a master’s degree in English have a wide variety of career paths available to them. Many graduates from this program go on to pursue jobs in editing, communications, professional writing and marketing.

The demand for writers and authors is expected to grow 7.5 percent from 2017-27. In 2016, the median annual salary for writers and authors was $61,240.

Many other graduates from this program continue their education at a doctoral level and pursue careers as university and college professors. Others become teachers at the elementary, secondary and junior college levels.

The demand for postsecondary teachers is expected to grow 12.7 percent from 2017-27. In 2016, the median annual salary for writers and authors was $75,430.

The Master of Arts in English consists of 33-36 credit hours, depending on which concentration you choose. This degree can be completed in two years.

Creative Writing Track (36 hours)
The Creative Writing track includes literature seminars and a core of workshops that allow writers to share their work in a professional, mentored environment. This is a good option for those who wish to develop writing as a creative practice alongside scholarly research and methodologies.

Literature Track (36 hours)
The Literature track may be used to develop strengths or explore new areas in the study of literature. Coursework combines period-specific seminars with foundation and practicum courses.

Rhetoric & Composition (33 hours)
The Rhetoric & Composition track is a combination of theoretical, practical and ethnographic courses that keeps students at the cutting edge of composition scholarship and encourages them to use knowledge to improve teaching, learning and literacy.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Completed application & $50 application fee
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of professional purpose (500-750 words)
  • Writing sample, either critical or creative, depending on the student’s area of interest (approximately 10-15 pages)


International Students
All international applicants from countries in which English is not the primary language must demonstrate proficiency in English language by submitting a minimum TOEFL score of 80 iBT (213 CBT/550 PBT). International applicants who receive a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Africa (English-speaking only) are not required to submit a TOEFL score.

Tuition & Scholarships

Creighton University’s Department of English believes in developing each student individually as a scholar and teacher. We offer five full fellowships which include complete tuition remission and a small living stipend.

In exchange, students work 15-20 hours per week as research fellows with an individual faculty member, and gain experience in teaching via a mentoring practicum in their second year.

We also offer five Presidential fellowships, which cover half of tuition.

Student Organizations

Shadows is Creighton University’s award-winning, student-run literary magazine. Annual prizes are awarded for student works for poetry, fiction and scholarly and creative non-fiction.

The Graduate Student Government considers concerns and interests of graduate students and makes recommendations to the Graduate School administration and the University.
