The need for professional negotiation and conflict resolution skills in business environments is growing. The Master of Business Administration/Master of Science in negotiation and conflict resolution (MBA/MSNCR) dual degree program from Creighton University’s Graduate School and the Heider College of Business is designed for mid-career professionals seeking to add interdisciplinary skills.

The field of conflict resolution is relatively new and still evolving. So, there’s no traditional career path. By combining business administration with dispute resolution, you’ll be equipped with the skills you need to pursue a career in human resources, law, project management, dispute resolution, education or business.

Curriculum

Students wishing to obtain the MBA/MS-NCR degree must complete 47 credits across the two programs. The 33-credit MBA degree may be obtained by combining 10 credits of MBA courses already required in the MS-NCR program with an additional 24 credits of MBA course work. As part of these 24 credits, students may count up to 8 additional hours of MS-NCR courses toward their MBA degree.

MBA Core Course
Students will complete the MS-NCR degree requirements with a concentration in organizational/transactional negotiation and conflict resolution. This option requires that a student take the following 9 credits of MBA course work, along with the required NCR courses:

  • MBA 741 Economic Analysis for Managers
  • MBA 771 Leadership and Organizational Behavior
  • MBA 776 Business, Ethics and Society

Students will also take MBA 775 Business Policy and Managerial Action as either their final class in the joint degree program or within 6 credits of completion of the MBA program.

MBA Plan of Study
All MBA/MS-NCR students will work with the Graduate Business Programs office to develop a plan of study reflecting the students’ academic and work backgrounds, business competencies, and career goals. The relative emphasis of a student’s plan of study on each of these areas will depend on each student’s academic and business background.

Functional Core
Students who are new to the study of business because they hold neither an undergraduate degree in business nor have extensive business work experience may be required to take some or all of the following functional core classes:

  • MBA 701 Financial Reporting for MBA’s
  • MBA 711 Managerial Finance
  • MBA 761 Marketing Management
  • ITM 731 Information Systems Management

After completing the above 12 credits, the remaining 9 credits in the MBA program may be completed with advanced courses from the MS-NCR program.

Concentration
Students who hold undergraduate business degrees or have extensive business experience may elect to move directly to concentration courses and not take the functional core courses listed above. Concentration courses cover advanced topics in accounting, economics, information technology, marketing, and management. To ensure appropriate breadth and depth:

  • Students must take one course in each of 2 of 4 functional areas (accounting, economics, information technology and marketing);
  • Students may take a maximum of 9 credits beyond MBA 771 in the management area; and
  • Students may count a maximum of 9 credits from the MS-NCR curriculum toward their MBA degree requirements, provided a grade of “B” or better is earned in each class.

Concentration Courses
Tier 2 courses are advanced courses in each functional area of business. They include, but are not limited to:

  • MBA 702 Managerial Decision Making Using Quantitative and Qualitative Data
  • MBA 712 Advanced Managerial Finance
  • MBA 742 Seminar in Applied Managerial Economics
  • MBA 765 Marketing Information for Executives
  • ITM 736 Managing Information Resources
  • ITM 788 Business Information Analysis and Process Design

Depending on the number of credit hours to be completed with concentration courses, students may wish to focus on particular business areas by taking multiple courses in a single area.

    The Creighton University Heider Business Senate is a liaison between the student body and the administration of the Heider College of Business. The Senate promotes the mission and values of the Heider College of Business through various projects.

    This society encourages and rewards scholarship and accomplishment among students of commerce and business administration. Beta Gamma Sigma promotes the advancement of education in the art and science of business and fosters integrity in the conduct of business activities.

Admissions Requirements

Eligibility for Admission
Applicants for admission to the MBA/MS-NCR program must have a baccalaureate degree in business from an accredited institution of higher learning, or, if the degree is in a field other than business, significant work experience in the field of finance. Applicants must also show evidence that they have completed at least one statistics course in their undergraduate degree. Students without such a class may complete instead a non-credit statistics tutorial offered by the college for a fee.
