Students in this program will learn how to analyze personal financial situations and evaluate client objectives, needs and values to develop a comprehensive financial plan using a six-step planning process.

The Personal Financial Planning Certificate curriculum consists of six courses designed to provide a focused and in-depth study of the field of financial planning, including covering the 72 Topic Areas of Learning specified by the CFP® Board of Standards.
The CFP® certification is recognized as the highest professional certification for financial planners. Earning your CFP® certification shows your clients and your employer that you are serious about financial planning. CFP® professionals are uniquely qualified to understand their clients’ financial situations and develop recommendations to help set and achieve their financial goals.
The Personal Financial Planning certificate has been approved by the CFP® Board of Standards as satisfying the academic requirements needed to sit for the CFP® exam. These include:
- Professional Conduct and Regulation
- General Principles of Financial Planning
- Education Planning
- Risk Management and Insurance Planning
- Investment Planning
- Tax Planning
- Retirement Savings and Income Planning
- Estate Planning
The coursework includes six classes for a total of 18 credit hours. Each course is eight weeks and is offered at least once per calendar year.

The requirements listed below apply to the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program only. If you choose to move on to the MBA program, you’ll need to complete additional requirements.
If you decide you want to go on to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA), credits earned in this program can be used toward an MBA with an emphasis in Personal Financial Planning.

- Completed application & $50 application fee
- Bachelor’s degree with 3.0 GPA or higher
- Must include coursework in accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and corporate finance
