As Mike Field was approaching the end of his service with the U.S. Army, he felt he needed something more to help prepare him for his transition into the workforce.
He had obtained his undergraduate degree in finance in 2012, but didn’t feel he had the knowledge and skills necessary to find meaningful work in portfolio management and investment analysis.
That’s when Mike decided graduate school was the right next step for him. He spent a lot of time carefully researching graduate schools and programs, with a few key requirements in mind: reputation, flexibility and quality.
Mike was looking to receive his degree from a well-regarded institution. After speaking with alumni, researching rankings and reviewing employment outcomes, he says choosing Creighton University’s Heider College of Business was an easy choice.
“For me, Creighton’s MIMFA program stood head-and-shoulders above the competition,” says Mike. “It was an easy decision to make once I did my homework.”
Because Mike was stationed in Germany, program flexibility was extremely important –and an online degree was non-negotiable.
“I literally completed half of the program in the middle of a forest in Bavaria,” says Mike. “I took a laptop with me into the woods and used my cell phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot to do everything I needed to do for class.”
Mike found online learning to have many advantages over a traditional classroom setting. He appreciated learning at his own pace, on his own time.
“With the video lectures, I could speed them up or slow them down,” says Mike. “I could watch them when I was ready – and watch them again and again until I understood. You can’t do that in a classroom.”
Mike had no work experience in the investments industry – and had only received a high-level overview of the field during his undergraduate studies. He was looking for a graduate program that dove deeply into investments, security analysis and portfolio management.
“The MIMFA program allowed me to have a much deeper understanding of the world I wanted to enter, and today I can contribute in my current role in a more meaningful manner than I might have otherwise,” says Mike.
Mike says the MIMFA program was also key in helping him prepare for the rigorous CFA exams – all of which he was able to pass on his first attempt.
“The MIMFA program was definitely the foundation to my understanding of the CFA curriculum,” says Mike. “It helped anchor many of the key CFA concepts in my mind with concrete examples from coursework, class discussion, projects and exams.”
Today, Mike works as a Portfolio Manager Associate at U.S. Trust in St. Louis – and he says he wouldn’t be where he is today without the MIMFA program and Creighton.
“The connections I have made, the breadth and depth of knowledge I have obtained, and the career opportunities that have been presented to me as a direct result of the MIMFA program are priceless.”
