As Ryon prepared for his transition from the military to the workforce, he felt a graduate education would be crucial in helping him achieve his career goals. He wanted to build upon his undergraduate education in finance, including earning his CFA® designation — one of the most widely regarded investment management credentials.
“Aside from my educational studies, I had no prior finance background,” says Ryon. “I felt that earning a graduate degree from a reputable university with a highly ranked finance program would provide the greatest opportunity to make my ambitions into a reality.”
When Ryon found Creighton’s Master of Investment Management and Financial Analysis (MIMFA) program, it stood out to him for many reasons.
One of the biggest selling points was the program’s flexibility. As an active service member Ryon lived by an ever-changing schedule that included multiple deployments. He needed a program that allowed him to participate when he was able.
“The first six months of my degree were completed while I was on deployment — mission, coursework and sleep was my routine,” says Ryon. He found online learning at Creighton to be accessible and engaging, with excellent video lectures, a high degree of flexibility and intriguing discussion posts.
Another selling point was the MIMFA program’s use of the CFA curriculum. He felt he was accomplishing two goals at once — earning a master’s degree and preparing for the rigorous CFA exams.
“All the professors are CFA charterholders, and that gave me the assurance that the professors were of high caliber and could best prepare me for the CFA exams and my future career in finance,” says Ryon.
Today, Ryon works as an Associate Director at Kroll Bond Rating Agency in New York City — and he says Creighton’s MIMFA program has been a huge part of his success at work.
“Since day one, I have felt the knowledge gained through the MIMFA program has allowed me to intelligently interact with professionals with significantly more experience,” says Ryon. “This program absolutely helped me earn my job and helped immensely in my advancement.”
